The
school aims to provide a balanced curriculum offering each pupil
a broad range of subjects. Schemes of work are based on the National
Curriculum, with variations embodied in some subjects to increase
individual interest and understanding. High standards of academic
work are expected and homework is compulsory and rigorously monitored.
Classes are small, the emphasis on individual guidance helping pupils
overcome difficulties which may arise.
After the foundations of good work have been laid through the broad
curriculum offered in the first three years, options are organised
so that each boy/girl has the opportunity to choose those subjects best
suited to his/her individual talents. Most pupils are prepared for nine
GCSEs. A small number choose a reduced package which allows for additional
classroom teaching in each subject designed to consolidate knowledge
and enhance the likelihood of good grades. There is a wide range
of "A" Levels for pupils to choose from when they enter the Sixth Form.
Most boys/girls secure places at University and the School has a proud
tradition of entry to Oxford and Cambridge.
Year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability classes. Specialist dyslexia
and support staff are available to give individual assistance by
private arrangement. Later there is streaming to accelerate the pace
for the most able whilst providing smaller teaching groups for those
who need most attention.
The PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) Curriculum covers
the whole school and includes components on sex education and religious
education. There is also a comprehensive careers programme focusing
on Years 10 and 11 and the Sixth Form.
Separate prospectuses are available covering GCSE options and the
Sixth Form.
