Years 7, 8 & 9

Our pupils in Years 7 to 9 are supported and looked after by a team of form tutors and the Head of Junior School. This team create an excellent family and working environment where the pupils discover their potential in both academic and extra-curricular pursuits.

Their achievements are recognised by the Merit System and the family atmosphere ensures that they will enjoy their life within the Junior School.

Years 10 & 11

We feel that our Senior School is unique within the area, as two curriculums are run side by side. The A form has a limited choice of options (6 GCSEs), with extra lessons in all subjects, enabling the pupils to achieve a good set of passes at the end of Year 11.

The other forms have the standard 9 GCSE package. With small class sizes and the support of form tutors and Heads of Year this encourages our pupils to excel in all their subjects.

Sixth Form

These two years are crucial to the development of the Sixth Former as both an individual and in turn accountable for their actions. It also allows them to be more self-reliant and their increasing sense of service is nurtured by taking responsibility as a house prefect or a school prefect by appointment of the Headmaster.

The small class sizes and the style of teaching at North Cestrian allows the pupils to not only to excel in their academic studies but also to discover their own beliefs and critical thinking needed to become a more rounded student and ready for the pressures of Further Education. They are amply supported by the tutor team and the Head of Sixth Form.

Special Needs Provision

We have a dedicated Learning Support  Department, comprising of a qualified co-ordinator, dyslexia tutors, maths and literacy support tutors and general classroom assistants. One to one lessons are given during the school day. Classroom Assistants also reinforce the work of subject teachers working with individuals or small groups in certain lessons.

We work closely with LEAs in the area to support statemented pupils. NCGS staff are qualified to conduct assessments for special dispensation for examinations or university.  This enables us to grant additional time in examinations or support through the use of laptop or reader/scribe.

There is a dedicated Learning Support Centre comprising a central base with satellite rooms for individual tuition and counselling.  The Hamblin Group provides pastoral care and activities to promote social skills and develop confidence, which in turn enhances the pupils' learning across the curriculum.
