| As
befits a small school, attention to the needs of the individual is
a reality and not an empty phrase. Throughout the School, staff and
pupils know and understand each other and this helps the development
of responsibility and mutual respect. The Form Tutor plays an essential part in this process, using the weekly tutor period as an opportunity to build up a working relationship with each child and maintaining a close watch on his progress and general welfare. Problems may be referred on to the relevant Year Head who has a vital role to play in the developing life of each child. Both the Deputy Head and the Head take a direct interest in pastoral support and guidance. Parental contact is encouraged and the homework diary is one means by which communication can be maintained. Effort and individual results are closely monitored and performance is discussed at regular staff meetings. Improved effort and performance are recognised through a code of conduct incorporating merit marks, Certificates of Achievement and public recognition as one means of boosting confidence and rewarding achievement. Parents are encouraged to contact the School to discuss issues of mutual concern, as the home-school partnership is highly valued at North Cestrian. Grades are sent home regularly and there are twice yearly reports following internal school examinations. There are annual parents' consultation evenings for each year group. In addition, special events are organised to deal with wide-ranging issues such as GCSE Options and University Entrance. Head of Juniors - Mr M Sharpe Head of Year 10 - Mr M Whittam Head of Year 11 - Mr A Boswell Heads of 6th Form - Mr R Horridge The School is very aware of its responsibilities in the field of Pastoral Care and believes that success here helps ensure the growing confidence and self-belief that ensures each child really does succeed to the best of his or her potential. We believe that success in this area comes from a positive and supportive attitude but recognise that such action which permeates our daily life needs to be reinforced by clearly defined policies and procedures. To this end, there are clear school rules and policies on Bullying, Discipline, Child Protection, Drug Abuse, Pupil Health and the like alongside a simple procedure for making a complaint should such be necessary. |
