| INTRODUCTION & STAFFING The PE Department at North Cestrian has an ambitious and forward-looking attitude towards sport. The Department is run by Mr Stobbs Head of PE and Sport with the assistance of Mr Boswell. The teaching of PE and Games is boosted by staff who are able to teach games along with their curriculum subjects. The aim of the department is to offer the boys the chance to reach their potential in the subject whilst offering a variety of sporting experiences to them. The lessons offer the boys the opportunity to develop both their skills and understanding of the activities. CURRICULUM HOW MUCH PE? During the week the pupils receive one 50-minute PE lesson which is based indoors. The pupils also receive a games afternoon where they are based at the games field where outdoor team sports are given priority. This allows the boys/girls a total time of 2 hours 30 minutes of PE and Games which is above the time stipulated by the Government guidelines for PE. ACTIVITIES The pupils are required to develop their skills in a number of areas ranging from indoor individual activities such as Health Related Fitness to outdoor team sports such as cricket. The programme of study is wide ranging to encourage the boys/girls to work as a team and also to be responsible for their own individual performance. ACTIVITIES COVERED DURING LESSONS Health Related Fitness Basketball Badminton Indoor Hockey Indoor Football Weights (Year 9 and above) Volleyball Football Rugby Outdoor Hockey Cross Country Tennis Cricket Athletics Softball Swimming EXTRA CURRICULAR SPORT The Department also runs a large programme of extra curricular sporting activities for the pupils to become involved with. The extra curricular opportunities are available during the lunch break or after school when all the boys are free to attend. The extra curricular sport usually backs up the work that has been covered during lessons and also allows the school squads extra time to practise. The School takes sport very seriously and runs a number of teams in a variety of sports. The school runs 5 football teams from Year 7 to 1st XI who compete against other schools on a Saturday morning as well as competing in the Mid-Cheshire League and Trafford Cup competitions. OTHER TEAMS Hockey Basketball Swimming Cross Country Tennis Cricket Athletics Golf The School competes regularly against ISA schools on a regional and national level and last year won the C Pool of the ISA Rugby 7’s tournament. The School has also run recent sporting tours with footballers going to Scotland and Golfers going to Shropshire. COMPETITION IN SPORT There are endless opportunities for the boys/girls to be involved in competition during sport. The first chance of competition comes if the boys are selected to represent one of the school squads. There are also the House Competitions in which boys/girls compete in a number of sporting events. The House Sport Competitions run on an ‘A’ team and ‘B’ team basis where all who compete score points for their House in the year long competition. EXAMINATIONS At present the Department offers AS and A2 Level Sport and Physical Education as an option for boys and girls in the Sixth Form. The course covers six modules, which allows the students to cover topics such as biomechanics, drugs in sport, elite performance and further anatomy and physiology. he course offers the students a challenge in a subject which pushes their knowledge in a number of different subject areas. |
