SOCIAL, HEALTH AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION INCLUDING CAREERS North Cestrian Grammar School has a comprehensive guidance programme with timetabled PSHCE lessons for all years. Five members of staff contribute their expertise to the programme. The PSHCE programme covers Self-awareness, Education for Citizenship, Health Education, Understanding Different Faiths, Environment Issues, Understanding Each Other and the Community in which we live. Specific topics include: Bullying, Smoking, Parliament and Elections, Finance, Sex Education, Careers and Options Guidance. Careers guidance plays a more important role in Years 10 and above. Work Experience is undertaken in Year 10 when placements are found with the help of BEST. Close contact is maintained with parents at all times in the process. The Higher Education programme in Years 12 and 13 prepares all students for entry into university: "Careers education and support for university entrance are excellent." (Independent Schools Inspectorate, 2001.) The complete programme of guidance helps promote self-awareness, enables students to make well-informed educational, vocational and training choices and facilitates the transition from secondary education to new roles including employment. Visiting speakers and outside agencies, notably Trafford Connexions, make a valued and enriching contribution to the whole school delivery of PSHCE. The Careers department enjoys the use of a dedicated room equipped with literature, computer facilities and reading space, allowing students to browse through university prospectuses. Video facilities also allow students to view prospective universities. Visits are undertaken to Higher Education Conventions and University Open Days and are supported by visiting speakers and whole school activities; charity days, etc. There is a thorough programme of Higher Education advice and guidance enabling students to apply to top universities and gain places on demanding and over-subscribed courses. |
